Three effects of the Industrial Revolution Essay
Three effects of the Industrial Revolution - Essay Example The workers themselves also took certain measures to shield their rights and interests ââ¬â the most crucial of these measures is the formulation of trade unions. Apart from technological changes, the social system also changed. Prior to the revolution, the people used to live in small villages, and they worked as craftsmen or agricultural worker, and used to do mostly everything by hand. In Britain, three quarters of the population mostly used to live in the countryside and farming was the most prevalent and popular population. However, when Industrial Revolution came into being, everything changed. The revamped laws entailed that the grazing grounds should be fenced at the expense of the owner, this also led to the bankruptcy and unemployment of many of the farm owners. Consequently, there were also many people who were compelled to work at the new factories. This also caused them to migrate to other towns and cities, and as a result, they were closer to their new job. There we re obviously disadvantages associated with this: they made relatively less money for working long hours at a stretch, and the expenses which came with moving to an urban area was an additional burden. Therefore women and children were sent out to work as well because families desperately needed money to get by. It also proved to be beneficial in a way because the factory owners discovered that children were better at picking up things and could be molded more easily to the working conditions. They could also work in the mines and were small and supple enough to extract the coal, making them prospective and ideal candidates for the job (Doyle, 2). However,...There was one result of these conditions that relevant action was undertaken to safeguard the workers, especially women and children from the threats of the factory system. There were also certain laws that were passed concerning the safety standards and measures in factories, the age limit for the youth, and creating schools for those children whose parents worked in the factories, and also other measures for safeguarding the lives of the workers. Operations Management - Discussion Paper - Essay Example The question of survival of the fittest has made the business organizations to increasingly take resort to the above strategy (Lawler and Worley, 2006, p.154-155). The paper endeavors to further divulge on the issue of gaining a new workforce at the cost of the existing people in a much detailed fashion. Maintenance of Stable Workforce within Organizations in Respect of Changing Markets The fact of changing market conditions impose challenges over the business organizations in regards to maintaining a stable workforce. It is found that to overcome the stress of external changes in the technological and competitive business sphere business organizations have shifted their endeavor to work for the development of the existing people to recruiting readymade skillful and productive workers from outside. Though it is held that retiring workers increases the turnover cost of the concerns yet it helps the concerns to strategize the development process of staffs to meet market demands. In ord er to compete with the technological and business development of its competitors the business concerns need to take in effective manpower that can be trained quite faster to help the organization counter market challenges. The policy of taking in new recruits and retiring the existing people in regards to market changes and opportunities is referred to as ââ¬Ëtravel lightââ¬â¢ and was employed by Kodak when film technology shifted from chemical to digital. Chemical engineers were replaced by digital photography engineers (Lawler and Worley, 2006, p.154-156). Workforce Stability in Organizations based on Financial Position of the Concern It is observed that taking resort to the above discussed ââ¬Ëtravel lightââ¬â¢ human resources policy endangers the business organization in regards to increasing the cost of human resources of the concern. The organization needs to both render immediate financial benefits to the retiring employees and also to invest quite enough to recru it and train the new workforce. The time required for the new employees to be trained properly requires existing employees to perform the overtime work for which they are required to be rightly paid. This increases the cost of operations for the firm (Indicator Protocols Set: EC, 2006, p.7). Toyota Foundation in Toyota Motor Corporation Essay
Toyota Foundation in Toyota Motor Corporation - Essay Example Through the visits to the US and Europe, and the research that he carried out, Kiichiro Toyoda gained a lot of insight and knowledge about automobile production. In 1933, the Toyota Automatic Loom Works Ltd established the Toyoda automobile department. This led to the creation TMC in 1937 as a separate and independent company, with Kiichiro Toyoda as its president (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). Before becoming a separate and independent company in 1937, TMC had already produced and sold its first standard passenger car, the AA sedan, in 1936. TMC got its logo from a public competition held in September 1936, in which participants were required to design the best logo. Toyoda then changed its name to Toyota, trademarked its new name, and registered itself as the TMC in August 1937. TMC officially began its commercial production of vehicles at the Honsha plant in 1938. From September 1947, it sold its small-sized vehicles under the name ââ¬Å"Toyopetâ⬠. The company focused on truck production during World War 2 for the Japanese army. Japan was hit by serious financial difficulties after World War 2. For this reason, TMC faced a financial crisis in 1949 that brought it to the brink of bankruptcy (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). During the financial crisis that the company faced, it only produced 300 trucks in 1950, and almost went out of business. To deal with the financial crisis, a consortium of banks lent TMC a loan to revamp itself. On obtaining the loan, the company began eliminating excess workers through layoffs and reduction of wages. In 1950, the company started the Toyota Motor Sales Company that lasted only until 1982 because it was merged with the TMC. Toyota launched the Crown Deluxe, Toyopet Master, and Toyopet Crown in 1955 (Toyota Motor Corporation 1). In 1950, Kiichiro Toyoda resigned as the president of TMC. Taizo Ishida took over the companyââ¬â¢s presidency and was credited for focusing his efforts on investing in equipment. One such example wasà when he led the establishment of the Motomachi plant.

Style over Substance - Essay Example However, for this to work effectively without swaying the viewing, specific regulations and understandings need to be considered. The effectiveness of televising the Presidential Debates is based on the capacity of giving viewers information about the persona, characteristics and ideologies of a given candidate. From a recent study, (Drew, 32), it was found that the Presidential Debates and the televised effects is what determined how citizens would vote. This pattern is one which was noted over a series of years, beginning in 1998. Each year, the vote became predictable by the debates and the responses which individuals had to these from the TV (Drew, 32). When looking at this information, it can be seen that voters rely on the information which they see on television based on the presidents, all which changes their outlook and decisions, specifically because of the knowledge received from the TV. The ability to receive knowledge about issues from the Presidential Debates is one whi ch should be considered not only with basic information, but also with the framework which is used. If citizens had the capacity of recognizing the models which were used with the debates, it would eliminate some of the abilities to change the mind of citizens in society.
Use and Abuse of Power in Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Use and Abuse of Power in Management - Essay Example It is necessary for both the mangers as well as the non managers to study organization because organizations are vital mechanisms and helps in achieving the goals in modern society. Therefore, the aim of the essay is important to be able to distinguish between the use of power management and its abuses. Thus in order to achieve the required aim, the essay would highlight the theories in literature review and provide an example in order to relate the theories with practical examples. Thus the essay starts off with an introduction on the use and abuse of power in the management, followed by a literature review, quoting the theories necessary for the topic. The next part of the essay would put light on practical examples of organizations with relation to use and abuse of power and finally the essay ends with a conclusion and recommendation for the managers stating how a manger should distinguish between use and abuse of power in management and work accordingly providing an effective result for the organization. It has been founded that there arise a thin level of difference between the use and abuse of power and the managers are familiar with the danger of uncoupling power with politics from an ethical point of view. Managers are concerned about how can the negative aspect of power be managed. Therefore the answer to this query lies in generating an understanding of the relationship between power, the ability to influence and the political process (Butcher & Clarke , 2008, p.19). Power is defined as the ability to marshal resources in order to get something done. The use of power and authority in organizations are crucial, but a manger needs to plans, manage, organize coordinate and control the various activities of an organization. And this makes one of the reasons as to why managers want to get promoted to a higher position so that they can utilize the power. Thus an organization can be seen as political system where the use and abuse of power plays a significant role in the functioning of the organization (Dzimbiri, 2009, p.33). Theoretical Background Introduction Leaders implement the task and roles with the help of power that they possess. It has been suggested that a leader should always stay away from blaming, coercive and bullying style of leadership. A manger can support innovations and the ongoing activities of the organization are many different ways. In a hierarchical organization, the locus of power is fixed and clear but in a fla tter structure power is more fluid and is constantly being negotiated. According to Adair, the authority in the organization is usually derived from position, knowledge and personality. Kotler suggested that the first and foremost thing which is important in leadership is to understand the types of power and the methods used to influence the people, to utilize different types of power as per the need and seek out the appropriate leadership role, to create more power and utilize them and finally to temper the use of power with maturity and self control and recognizing the impact of use and abuse of power on others (Morrison, 1998, p.214). It has been found out by the authorities that effective use of power is the most important element of management. Some of the leaders have proved themselves to be highly influential leaders and powerful. These leaders were powerful because of the fact that they were able to build a strong

Theoretical Perspective Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Theoretical Perspective - Dissertation Example Christensen, a Harvard Business School professor. He perceived technologies as falling into two categories, namely sustaining and disruptive. Sustaining technology was viewed as small additional improvements to technology that already exists. Disruptive technology is generally lacking in refinement but given time to develop, they in time replace the technology that is currently prevailing. The implications for business are significant if their products fall within the scope of the existing technology, since the disruptive technology is not immediately manifest and there is a risk that they may be rendered obsolete and lose their competitiveness (Kuzma & Priest, 2010). Technology Acceptance Model The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is a theory that tries to describe the internal process undertaken by users in deciding to accept and use a new technology. Developed by Fred Davis in 1989, the TAM is currently gaining popularity among researchers particularly in the field of information systems (IS) development. Presently, not many lay people are aware of nanotechnology, and those who are regard it as too unfamiliar and are therefore suspicious of it. The diagram following shows how TAM perceives the technology acceptance process. In this model, ââ¬Ëperceived usefulnessââ¬â¢ is the extent to which a potential user believes that a particular technology would be advantageous to him or her, while ââ¬Ëperceived ease of useââ¬â¢ is the extent to which a potential user believes that use of a particular system would be effortless or easy (Davis, 1989). Technology Acceptance Model http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Technology_Acceptance_Model.png Sociopolitical modernization and postmodernization Modernization and postmodernization refer to the process of social change. The concept of modernization views economic, social and political development to be linked in a coherent manner, and that all societies that undergo modernization tend to follow a consistent pat h. Researchers note that almost all societies that reach an advances state of development experience a shift from ââ¬Ëmodernââ¬â¢ goals of economic and physical security, to post-modern values that emphasize quality of life and self-expression. The development of nanotechnology, because of the enhancement of human lifestyle of which it is capable, will be viewed in terms of post-modernization (Ghazinoory & Ghazinouri, 2009). Diffusion of Innovation The diffusion of innovation theory is the model by which innovation is thought to be communicated through channels over time among the members of a social system. In this model, an innovation may be an idea, practice, or object which the social system views as new, and diffusion is the particular type of communication through which the message associated with the innovation is passed through the system. Diffusion of innovation is comprised of four elements, namely the innovation, communication channels, time, and the social system. The Diffusion of Innovation model is shown below (Rogers, 1997): Biomedical Ethics One of the most contentious theories that nanotechnology may expect to be entangled in is that of biomedical ethics or bioethics. The reason is that much of nanotechnology applications are in the sphere of medicine, where one of the more exciting prospects is the use of nanotechnology for the cure of cancer. Biomedical ethics concerns itself with the
